It was thefirst reading series to enforce strict vocabulary control over selections.William S. Gray, a renowned educational psychologist and reading authority fromthe University of Chicago became a senior co-author with William H. Elson increating this series.The authors haveattempted to provide an interesting, purposeful, and comprehensive reading coursefor children. To achieve this purpose the authors have assembled materials fromthe worldwide field of children’s favorite readings. Thus basic readingattitudes and habits are developed through the purposeful use of interestingand significant content. Using this series of readers, the children can learnto read first, and then read to learn in their future life.

  威廉· S· 格雷(William Scott Gray, 1885- 1960)美國(guó)芝加哥大學(xué)博士、教授,曾擔(dān)任芝加哥大學(xué)教育系研究生院閱讀研究專業(yè)主任,及世界閱讀學(xué)會(huì)首任會(huì)長(zhǎng)。在近40 年的時(shí)間里,他一直是世界閱讀研究的權(quán)威學(xué)者。他在芝加哥大學(xué)的博士論文題為“小學(xué)閱讀的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化測(cè)試”。他帶領(lǐng)的研究團(tuán)隊(duì),將閱讀技巧訓(xùn)練與閱讀效果檢測(cè)相結(jié)合,并將學(xué)術(shù)研究成果應(yīng)用于學(xué)校閱讀教材的編寫,《Basic Readers》便是他與另一位教育者和教材編寫專家合作的成果。 威廉· H· 愛(ài)爾森(William HarrisElson,1856-1935)出生于美國(guó)俄亥俄州卡洛爾,畢業(yè)于美國(guó)印第安納大學(xué)。作為一位教師與教育管理者,他在教育改革方面做出了很大貢獻(xiàn)。1907 年他建立了美國(guó)第一所技術(shù)高中。此外,他還是一位著名的教材編寫者,除本套教材外,他編寫了多套美國(guó)學(xué)校使用的現(xiàn)代教材。這些教材除美國(guó)外,在全球34 個(gè)國(guó)家銷售使用,累計(jì)銷量超過(guò)5000萬(wàn)冊(cè)。
